Instead of boosting my productivity, my previous task management app had so many customization options that it actually ate away at my time. It became a procrastination tool. In contrast, Things 3 is wonderfully simple and clarifying.

The scheduling feature has been the real game changer for me. The app tracks due dates if you have them but—more importantly— you can also add a schedule date for each task. So you can plan your time and easily rearrange that plan as needed. But I find that I do better by adding the accountability of a scheduled list of things that I want to get done on a particular day or in a particular week.

You can create multiple projects , which each contain their own set of tasks. Tasks can be grouped into headed lists. You can even group projects if you have several of a similar type. You can break tasks further with checklists, which can be ticked off just like tasks. You can also set up recurring tasks. That way, when you finish one, a new one will be created, saving you the hassle.

That can be a big timesaver if you have lots of regular chores that you need to tick off. Tasks can be categorized via tags. There are a few of those by default, but you can add your own as needed. Read our best speech-to-text software guide if that feature appeals to you.

On the desktop macOS app, you go to the notifications center and pick Things from the apps listed there. You can also type in times and dates. You can then see which tasks are scheduled for the current day and view upcoming tasks in a list. If you want to give your eyes a rest, you can switch Things from its light color scheme to a dark one.

Achieving this meant not only creating a speedy sync engine in the cloud, but also finely tuning each of the apps to process changes from it quickly.

The result is a nimble service that makes light work of complex processes.
